The second trailer for X-Men: First Class delivers an explanation of the origin story, with Marvel Comics' Professor X and Magneto still allies.

The footage of this highly anticipated fourth installment in the franchise shows the unfolding of the mythic narrative with Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, played by James McAvoy ( Atonement) and Michael Fassbender ( Inglourious Basterds), respectively.

As friends working together, the two mentor young mutants at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and the beginnings of different attitudes develop. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, attempts to prevent nuclear war are complicated by their diverging views.

The film chronicles the rise of Charles Xavier becoming Professor X and Eric creating the Magneto Brotherhood. As young men they discover their powers while working together with other mutants who intend to stop the greatest threat to the world - nuclear war.

Footage shows the mutants transforming through dramatic special effects as well as epic battles. As a rift between the two severs the friendship, the start to their relationship as archenemies develops.

Xavier wants to guide the mutants, but Lehnsherr believes that humans' fear of mutants will turn to hatred. It grows clear they are on different paths.

Directed by Matt Vaughn ( Kick-Ass), the film also features Jennifer Lawrence ( The Winter's Bone), January Jones ( Mad Men) and Kevin Bacon ( Frost/Nixon).
