China the top travel destination on British people's bucket list, new survey claims

China is the top travel destination on the bucket list of one in four people polled for a new survey, beating Singapore, Bali and South Korea to top spot.

The Great Wall, the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the Terracotta Army in Xi’an were among the sites people wanted to visit.

The poll of 2,000 adults also found that six in 10 respondents believed the Great Wall is visible from space, which is in fact an urban myth.

More than a third of those surveyed said would like to visit the Chengdu Panda Base, while one in six said they would be happy to try all the food on offer in China, including snake and insects.

Thirty-five per cent did not rule out eating 1,000-year-old eggs and 41 per cent would not say no to chicken feet.

The souvenir most of those surveyed said they would like to bring back from their travels would be a fridge magnet, followed by some Chinese snacks.

“Although it’s surprising that so few British people have travelled to China, it’s fantastic to see there is such a strong appetite to travel to the country," said Hongbing Chen, deputy general manager for Air China Europe, which commissioned the research.
