Australia's Michael Doohan, who has already won 12 races this season, claimed provisional pole position yesterday for tomorrow's Indonesian 500cc Grand Prix. Doohan, already assured of his fourth world title, took his Repsol Honda around the Sentul circuit in 1min 26.214sec. Honda riders filled the first four places, with Tadayuki Okada of Japan second, Alex Criville of Spain third and Nobuatsu Aoki of Japan fourth.

Niall Mackenzie celebrated retaining his British Superbike title by shattering the Donington Park lap record to claim provisional pole start for tomorrow's final races of the season. The 36-year-old Scotsman powered his Yamaha to a 1min 10.713sec lap of the 1.957mile National Circuit, 1.4sec inside the record. Mackenzie was 0.01sec faster than Iain Macpherson on a Kawasaki.
