A man from the US state of New York has been charged with slipping his pregnant girlfriend abortion pills as they had sex, causing the stillborn birth of her 3-month-old foetus.

When the woman felt intense pain in her abdomen after Shervaughn Remy secretly administered the drug, she went to a local hospital. There, a doctor removed two pills identified as the abortion drug Cytotec from inside her, the New York Post reported.

A number of hours after seeing the doctor, the woman gave birth to the stillborn child, according to official documents.

The 34-year-old Crown Heights apartment resident was arrested on Valentine’s Day last year, and pleaded not guilty to felony abortion – an offence punishable by up to four years in prison.

“My client maintains his innocence,” defense attorney David Zelman said in Brooklyn Supreme Court, adding that the alleged victim told him she does not want an order of protection or to press charges.
