Religious row mars India poll
NEW DELHI (Reuter) - Members of India's parliament and state assemblies started voting yesterday to elect the country's ninth president, but the rekindling of a religious dispute took most of their attention.
Both houses adjourned after opening in uproar over the start of building last week of a Hindu temple where a mosque was built by the Mogul emperor Babar. More than 2,000 people have died in riots over the dispute. In the election, Vice-President Shankar Dayal Sharma is expected to win easily.
