The Week in Review

BRITAIN'S tennis players have been a traditional source of black sporting humour, but they are no longer in the class of England's cricketers. After the abject defeat of Graham Gooch's team by Australia in the second Test, the first week of Wimbledon at last provides some comfort.

Andrew Foster leads the way by reaching the fourth round to maintain British interest into the second week. Chris Wilkinson cruises into the third round where he meets Stefan Edberg today, while Chris Bailey goes close to knocking out the No 5 seed Goran Ivanisevic, holding a match point at one stage before losing in five sets.

The Lions are left to lick their wounds after defeats by Auckland and Hawke's Bay in the build-up to the second Test against the All Blacks, while Britain's golfers are left among the also-rans as Lee Janzen wins the US Open at Baltusrol by two strokes from Payne Stewart.

Alan Sugar adds another twist to the Tottenham saga by appointing Ossie Ardiles manager much to the chagrin of his former club, West Bromwich Albion.
